Distance education- It is now an important component

Monday, May 24th, 2010

The standard of distance learning has vastly improved over the past few years, as both students and educators have become more tech-savvy, and theory of best practices is widespread. Even though standard has improved significantly since many inferior programs have failed, it is however still far-sighted to verify as to whether the institution is completely accredited by the relevant authorities. The purpose of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets adequate levels of standard. Distance learning brings forth a number of advantages, predominantly for non-U. S. students looking for an internationally accredited degree. In fact the most significant benefit is the ease of remaining in your native country while studying and thereby avoiding the inconvenience of applying for a student visa to study abroad. Other advantages include: Convenient for those living away from the institution Saving of time and other resources like transport Flexibility to study in any favorable location through an internet connection Self-paced learning: o Browse for materials you are already good at in no time and target time and effort in areas that needs more information o Study materials at a personal speed and intensity, without the hassle of facing slow pace of the typical classroom o Flexibility to chat in the discussion board anytime, for example some institutions allow you to view your classmates’ comments ever since the previous log in More opportunities to study the latest material available due to Just-in-time learning nature of online education Flexible system for those with irregular work timings, for example Online high school allows access to Classrooms 24/7 Convenient for those with limited mobility (e. g. , handicapped, injured, elderly) Easy for those with family responsibilities (e. g. , parents with young children at home) A recent research has shown that the most important factor helping students to succeed at online education has been their capability to manage time. The best of students reported spending 2 to 3 hours regularly each week for each hour of credit for a particular class.

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Nowadays, parents of music-oriented kids are worried about how to get their children off their computers and other electronic gadgets and instead have them spend more time on their pianos mastering their piano-playing skills. This is a problem a lot of parents worry about these days when children learn early the amazing features and properties of the Internet. What they don’t know is that they could actually get the help of the Internet to get their kids more interested in music and in piano playing-and that is having them enrolled in piano lessons online. So you’re looking for more interesting and more interactive ways to get your child interested in playing the piano? You can get started by acquiring piano software coupled with piano lessons online. These materials provide a great avenue for your child to learn more the basics of piano playing as compared to getting him or her under more expensive tutorials with a private piano instructor. Enrolling your kid online for his piano lessons will give you a great array of benefits as opposed to having him registered in the boring community or neighborhood piano lessons or the regular classroom piano lessons. For one, you will notice that piano lessons online provide a wide selection of courses to choose from. You can opt to have your child enlisted in basic piano lessons or the more specialized ones like gospel piano lessons or jazz piano lessons. You are also given the option to pick the level of difficulty of the lessons that you can have your child enrolled in. Also, piano lessons online are a lot cheaper than getting your child a private piano teacher that you need to pay by the hour. Some parents have discovered that one-on-one piano lessons normally get their kids intimidated and have them less enthusiastic compared to giving them complete freedom over the pace they can go with piano lessons on the Internet. Children who are coursing through gospel piano lessons, for example, find it more inspiring to learn online than with a personal tutor. So take time to weigh this advantage and see for yourself how pocket-friendly getting piano lessons online for your kid is. Another benefit your child gets with getting his piano course or his gospel piano lessons online in particular is that he gets to manage his own time. He can log in whenever he feels like learning some new notes or a new piece and not feel any pressure. Obviously, no child seems to be enthusiastic about learning when he is made to feel some pressure for time or from instructions from a personal tutor. Online piano lessons will teach your child how to properly manage his time to accommodate his piano lessons together with his daily routine of playing and studying his other academic lessons. There are actually a lot of perks that parents and kids alike can reap from completing piano lessons on the Web. That’s a lot of savings for the parents, and discipline and more fun for the kids. So get your kids more interested with music by having them take their gospel piano lessons or pop piano lessons or jazz piano lessons on the Web.

NHC-Language Awareness to the Rescue!

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Stepping into the classroom for the first time can be a nerve-racking experience, not just for students but for novice teachers as well. For some teachers this recurring albeit low-level anxiety is the single most detractive feature of what would otherwise be a near perfect job. But what’s the cause of all this stress? In fact it all boils down to something teachers share in common with their students: the fear of grammar. Strangely enough it’s often native English speakers who struggle the most to get to grips with all the grammar jargon required by the TEFL profession. This is because schools in Britain, America and other places whose first language is English cover very little grammar in their curricula. Non-native speakers who have learnt English by living in an English-speaking country will probably have similar problems. In effect many EFL teachers eventually end up learning grammar on their feet in the classroom, since few teaching certificate courses have time to include a crash course in such an extensive area. For some it’s a challenge that they thrive on but most will admit that there’s nothing more dissatisfying than having to fudge an answer to a student’s question. That’s where Notting Hill College’s Language Awareness Course comes in. This thirty-unit distance learning course has been designed specifically to meet the needs of both trainee and experienced teachers who feel that their English grammar knowledge is not up to scratch. The course is exceptionally thorough, providing full coverage of the essential areas of English grammar and more. The course materials are exclusive to Notting Hill College and include the tailor-written 250 page NHC Language Awareness grammar reference book, which will stand teachers in good stead for the rest of their TEFL careers and is almost worth enrolling for in itself. Thankfully, trainees are not left to wade through this vast albeit invaluable tome themselves, but are provided with extensive e-support by Notting Hill College’s experienced team. Moreover, as a distance learning package, trainees can complete the course at their leisure, whether before, after or during any other TEFL certificate programme. Not for the first time Notting Hill College’s people-first ethos has led to their developing a teacher training solution that deals head-on with one of the pivotal issues facing EFL teachers. Now it’s up to you to start being part of that solution.

Massachusetts Test For Educator Licensure Guidance And Preparation Tips

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

To obtain a teaching certificate in the state of Massachusetts, you must pass a test of your communication and literacy skills (how well you can read and write), and a test of your content knowledge in the appropriate field. If you want a license to teach at the early childhood or elementary level, you must also pass a test of your knowledge about what is involved in teaching children to read. Three resources are readily available as you prepare for these different MTEL challenges: (1)the MTEL internet web site, (2)faculty in your program, and, (3)your own preparation time. The MTEL program provides a number of practical resources to help you prepare for the exam. Log onto the internet and simply enter “MTEL” in the search field and you will be led to the website for this program. Here you will find a listing of all the MTEL tests, by specific fields, and the dates they are scheduled to be administered across the state. There are test information booklets and other materials that you can either send away for or review on line. Within each of the fields that offer certification, for example, you will find a document that clearly describes what the specific test objectives are for that test. You can use these as a study guide to make sure you have reviewed all of the key subject area knowledge that will be tested in your area of certification. The web site has a practice test for most content areas. You can take the practice test as a way to familiarize yourself with how the multiple choice questions are structured, with the level of difficulty, with the depth of understanding that will be required to choose among the given answers, with the amount of time it takes, and so on. The answers are provided at the end, so that you can also see how well you did. Every MTEL test includes one or two open-ended responses: questions that require an answer in the form of an essay. Sample open-ended questions are included on the practice test, along with sample weak and strong responses to those questions. You can use these to better understand what is expected on open response items – that is, how to construct a response that will demonstrate the depth of your knowledge and understanding. The standard criteria that are used to evaluate all open-ended responses are given to you, along with an analysis of how the sample weak and strong responses met or failed to meet those criteria. With regard to the communication and literacy skills (referred to as “comlit”) portion of the test, be aware that some colleges and universities have decided to require students to pass that test before they can be admitted to a teacher education program. The reasoning here is that it doesn’t make sense to devote the program’s resources to individuals who do not yet demonstrate college level competence with reading and writing, because those are fundamental to all teaching skills. In those cases, students would take the comlit test by the end of their sophomore year of college, before the courses specific to teacher preparation begin. Even if your institution does not require this, it may be to your benefit to see if you can pass the comlit test before you make a final decision to be a teacher. Your ability to obtain meaning from textual material, and to communicate meaning clearly – in writing and orally; to children, to professional colleagues, to parents – will be essential to your success as a teacher. Talk to faculty members in your teacher preparation program about what their expectations are for the communication and literacy skills of their students, and what is done during the program to ensure that their students can meet the reading and writing standards of the MTEL comlit test. Every time the MTEL tests are administered and scored, DESE receives a detailed report that profiles how the students in each teacher education program at each college and university in the state performed on that test. That information is then passed on to each institution. You can ask faculty members to share with you which sections of the test their students have typically had the hardest time passing, and what recommendations they make to students to help them succeed on the test. The same is true for the content test you will take at the end of your teacher preparation program for certification as a teacher in a particular field. Find out from the faculty how well their students have done on the content-specific MTEL test. Find out if there are any areas where their students are usually weak, and what recommendations they make to help students succeed. After all, the reason DESE communicates the test results to each program is so that the faculty of the program will address areas where they need to do a better job of preparing their students. Having all this information leads naturally to the point where you are ready to study for the test because you have a much clearer picture of what to study. The test objectives for your subject area are the best guide to the specific content that you’ll find worth reviewing. Do you study best when you can exchange questions and ideas with others? If your teacher preparation program does not run study groups to help students prepare for the test, think about forming a group that will meet regularly and share responsibility for making sure that each content area is thoroughly reviewed. It is important to include essay writing in your study time. Since both the comlit and subject area tests have questions that require you to construct a response out of all that you know, and to do so in a relatively short amount of time, writing responses to some open-ended questions will help you feel more confident in the testing situation when you encounter an open response item. No doubt you are aware of the expense involved in taking a teacher certification exam. (If not, those costs are given on the web site as well. ) Although you can retake these tests as many times as you need to, most students want to make every dollar count, pass the test on the first try, get their certificate, and go get a teaching job. If that’s what you want, then take full advantage of all the test preparation resources available. Massachusetts needs teachers who are dedicated to the process of learning – including their own.

How to Survive a Large Lecture Class in College

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Large college classes can be intimidating. Instead of sitting with 20 or 30 students, you find yourself facing 100 to 500 in just one classroom. Before you panic, take the following tips into consideration. You will find that you can be just as successful in a big college classroom as you would in a small one. Sit Up Front Sitting up front is the best way to ensure that you are getting the information absorbed. Instead of hearing people jabber in front of you about the latest gossip, you will be able to focus completely on the professor and what is being taught. Studies have shown that students who sit toward the front of the class perform better on tests and, therefore, get better grades. So, when you arrive to class on your first day, pick a seat in the middle and within the first few rows. Sit in the same place everyday to get your mind in a routine so that you learn more efficiently. Get to Know Your Professor Since large college classes don’t provide much time, if any, to talk to the professor, stop by during their office hours and say hello. When you introduce yourself, you are showing your professor that you care and are serious about your education. Even if you don’t need help learning the material, schedule a meeting with them every once in awhile to let them know what career track you have in mind, what you hope to accomplish and what you have found interesting in their class. If you find yourself having trouble learning in class, scheduling an office visit allows you to have one-on-one time with the professor. Large class sizes mean that the class learns at the same pace. Unfortunately, students learn on all different levels, and can easily fall behind if they don’t seek help. Don’t be afraid to send an email to your professor and ask for some assistance. You will find that they want to see you succeed! Get to Know the People Around You The advantage of large class sizes is that there are plenty of people to make friends with. Introduce yourself to the people who sit around you and ask if they would like to have a study group sometime. These contacts also come in handy if you ever find yourself sick and unable to make class. Additionally, these students can assist you in the learning process so that you can learn the material from multiple points-of-view. Avoid Distractions The large amount of people around you is enough of a distraction. Adding a computer to the mix may only make things worse for you. It is so tempting to jump on Facebook and write on your friend’s wall when the lecture gets boring or the material seems redundant. The best way to avoid getting distracted is to take only the materials you need. It may take some adjusting to write notes by hand, but the benefits heavily outweigh any negatives. Not only will you be avoiding distractions by not having a computer around you, but you will also be absorbing the material better. Writing notes in a journal is a more effective way to learn material, and it can easily be studied anytime, anywhere. Attend Class Going to class is the easiest way to ensure that you are successful in a large class. You will find that professors don’t take attendance when a class is so large, so several students will ditch on a regular basis. Don’t be one of those students! Even though the lecture may bore you, going to class is the easiest way to learn the material. In addition to learning the material, your professor will also notice that you are attending class everyday. Professors are much more likely to assist you if you are having trouble with the material when they see that you are in class every time. Study Hard Studying the material is the best way to stay on-top of what is being lectured on, and to ensure that you perform well on the tests. Professors often won’t tell you what is on the test, so reading the materials and reviewing your notes will allow you to perform better on exams and assignments. As said before, don’t be afraid to ask your professor for help if you feel like you are struggling or falling behind. With these tips in mind, you should have no problem being successful in a large college classroom. Stay positive, do your work and make some friends along the way!

Is There Hope For A Kindle Application In Universities

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The Kindle DX was designed specifically for use in schools. The system has a cool 10″ screen which makes it very easy to read documents, textbooks, and other classroom materials. It’s easy to use, is lightweight, and cuts the cost of books at the college and university levels to less than half of what you have to pay at the school bookstore. So, what is the problem? The use of the Kindle application in Universities and public schools is no longer being supported or promoted. One tiny little flaw has effectively eliminated the support of this eReader in schools. Unfortunately, the designers thought of everything when building this eReader, except, they didn’t read the laws about the United State Disabilities Act and it’s relationship to education in the US. A tiny flaw yes, but nevertheless fatal. During the testing phase of the eReader at four major universities, it was found that there was no way that visually impaired students could use the menu and navigation features of the reader to get to the books that are available in text-to-speech. This problem eventually rose to the Department of Justice where it was decided that, since the system does not meet the ADA regulations, it cannot be used in public schools. The universities have decided that the Kindle DX and any other eBooks will not be provided, promoted, or recommended unless they are made accessible to visually impaired students. It has been agreed by everyone involved that the use of an eReader in schools is a great idea and one that will eventually bring the provider who comes up with the right system a great deal of profit. Kindle is working on a fix for this issue and has stated that they should have something out by Summer. Unfortunately, once a company has been thrown under the bus, they generally stay squished. The issue is really about more than the eReader, it is about the incredible profit that most educational systems make through the sale of books. And the fact that the eReader is going to remove a great deal of the profit made from people who are very comfortable with the status quo as it is. Another issue is of copyright and lending from university libraries. According to the article “Why Universities Should Make Textbooks Available on e-Readers”, the problem is that Amazon states that it is not permitted to lend Kindles, and although Amazon reps have verbally given the nod, this was not put in writing (Digital Book Readers). When a full-time student is getting ready for a semester at a college or university, several thousand dollars are going to be spent on books and mandatory materials that are only sold through the bookstore of the university. While there have been several laws and regulations passed in an attempt to keep textbook prices reasonable, this has not resulted in any savings to the student. Finding alternative ways to get books that are required for courses are continually explored by students who are trying to get an education. As anyone who uses a voice recognition system on their home computer knows, there are some very simple ways to incorporate voice commands for menu and navigation on a program. Kindle DX and other eReaders will undoubtedly use these same tools on their eReader to make it functional for any student in an educational setting. Even with the restriction on sales of eReaders and the Kindle application in Universities, over ten million students are using the applications. While the fight may continue for several years in the academic and judicial arenas, many students are finding that they can control at least part of the money that is spent on their education by getting an eReader that has the same benefits that the Kindle eReader offers.

What to Look For in a LCD Stand

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Businesses like physical therapy offi ces, home offices, and classroom settings all advocate the use of LCD stands. You may be considering buying one or more of these LCD stands for the use of LCD monitors for your office or home computers. There are several things to look for in a good quality LCD stand that may seem obvious but seem to slip the minds of clever shoppers all the time. These qualities include sturdy material, adjustable height, bottom or mid-shaft storage, and wheels for easy movement. MaterialAny LCD stand should be made by top quality, sturdy material like metal or wood. Flimsy aluminum (as opposed to strong alloy-type aluminum) shouldn’t be considered, and the same goes for wooden-esque material that is basically plywood covered in wooden paneling. If there is a display model, try shaking it a little or checking the label for a materials list to make sure everything is top quality. You don’t want a LCD stand to have a meltdown that ends up damaging your LCD monitor or computer. Adjustable HeightAnother good feature to look for when shopping for a LCD stand is whether it has an adjustable height. This is especially important if more than one person will be using the stand. For example, a 5′ woman will not have the same comfort if the stand is set on the level most comfortable for a 6′ man. Some LCD stands also lower to a height that would be comfortable for someone sitting on a stool as well. So an adjustable height on your LCD stand will be very useful to you, and is a good quality to look for when shopping. StorageBecause you will be using your LCD stand not only to hold the monitor, but the tower part of your computer, it is important to buy a stand that has room for all parts of your computer. Most LCD stands come with adequate space on the bottom of the stand for the tower and other important things to keep with the computer. Adequate storage makes for less frustrating operation – things don’t have to be piled on top of the stand itself when it can be stored underneath it. WheelsIt may seem like a no-brainer, but buying a LCD stand with adequate wheels will be extremely important to the mobility of the stand. You want wheels that sit high enough off the ground so they will roll properly on any surface, including carpet. Make sure the wheels of the stand are good quality and don’t have any problem rolling around on your floors. Listen for squeaking and/or wobbling as it rolls, sure signs that they are not good quality. The stand is really only as good as its wheels, and if one or more wheels is dysfunctional it can cause the entire stand – with your LCD monitor or laptop on it – to wobble or malfunction. And you don’t want to take a chance with expensive equipment like that.
