Should You Study Your Course Through Distance-learning, Online, or Face to Face?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

RTOs around Australia typically offer either one or more choices when it comes to course delivery of their most popular courses. Most commonly, these are online-learning, distance-learning (or correspondence), and face to face (usually called “blended-delivery”, a 5 or 10 day workshop, usually requring additional homestudy – completing many of the major assessment at home). So. . . one is best?. . Well, that’ depend on the individual completing the course. . . Distance-Learning/Online Course DeliveryDistance-learning/Online delivery are easily the more popular methods of delivery for clients of my training organisation . This is typically because it means learners can start straight away while they are motivated to complete their course, rather than having to wait for face-to-face course intake dates. Distance/Online delivery normally involves receving either hardcopy, or electronic copies of training course materials and Learner Guides from the registered training organisation via post and/or email, or through an online gateway, and working through your course, unit by unit. Because you are working through the units at your own pace, this can be a fabulous way to complete your training, because rather than having all of the course units crammed into a 5 or 10 day workshop, you can give yourself time to really consolidate the material, completing assessments as you go and building upon your new skills and knowledge bit by bit. Interestingly, I was speaking with a auditor contracted by the Department of Education and Training (DETA) just last month, whom expressed a preference for distance and/or online learning because it enabled students to deepen their knowledge of the training course material without having the problem of ‘in one ear, out the other’ than can come from receiving too much course information too quickly in too short a space of time, without the time to really consolidate the information. When studying your Certificate of Diploma course through distance/online-learning make sure that the Registered Training Orgnanisation (RTO) you choose gives you good access to your Trainer. Ask them if you will be able to contact your Trainer via telephone as well as through email. Call the RTO and see how quickly they can respond to your enquiry, ask lots of questions and see that they can find out anything you would like to know in a timely manner. This is a great way to preview the ongoing support you are likely to receive from that organisation. Besides, the last thing you want to do is pay your course fees and start your course and then find out you don’t have the support you need to complete your course! All in all, distance/online delivery suits a lot of students. It enables you to start straight away while you are motivated to complete your Certificate or Diploma training, and by working through units and assessment items step by step, you are likely to gain a solid understanding of what being a good Trainer is really about. After all, students undertake a course because they want to develop and deepen their training skills. Make sure whoever you choose is going to make this happen! Face to Face Workshop (including Blended-Delivery) Some clients choose to undertake their chosen course by attending a workshop. This may be due to the company policy, or preference if clients are being put through training by their organisation, or it may be because learners prefer to learn through face-t0-face contact, or in classroom setting. Really, it is a preference thing, because some people may not feel comfortable working through the material at home, or simply find they learn best in a classroom environment. Face-to-face workshops durations can vary from course to course, from 1 day through to 30 days or more, depending on the registered training organisation and the course being completed. The term “Blended-Delivery” is typically used to communicate that completing a workshop does not instantly qualify learners with the Certificate of Diploma qualification. In fact, a large proportion of course assessment items are frequently completed by students at home, after the workshop, or between two workshop clusters (e. g. some courses may have a 5 day workshop, and then another 5 day workshop one month later, with students completing assessment items between clusters at home). While blended-delivery can be a great way to have the course material presented and provide learners with a classroom environment, it is worth examining, how short or long is the course? How is the course broken up over time? Shorter workshops may mean that you have a large amount of information delivered in a very short space of time. For some students, this suits and they have a great experience. For others, they would really prefer to work through their Certificate of Diploma at a slower pace, therefore distance/online learning may be more appropriate. Conclusion ultimately, which course delivery method learners should choose is a personal choice. These days, most prefer the flexibility of distance/online learning because it allows them to start immediately and work the training around their lifestyle. Additionally, because students are working through the material at their own pace it may mean they have a better grip on the skills and knowledge by the end of the course; however this is by no means always the case. Some prefer having a face-to-face element because classroom interaction is appealing to them and as a learner the feel they are best taught through this method. Whatever the choice, if you are looking at studying any course, make sure your chosen RTO delivery quality’s training, good learning materials, and timely student support. Your success may depend on it!

Black Diamonds and Magic Helmets in Scotland

Monday, April 26th, 2010

The Scottish Mining Museum near Edinburgh, which was opened in 1984 to preserve and protect the heritage of Scottish Mining, tells the story of this demanding and dangerous industry. British coal mining began during the Middle Ages. Coal output began to grow and the mines had to go deeper. The owners looked for cheaper and more reliable methods of pumping water out of these deep mines. Steam machinery, powered by coal, was developed for this task. Machines were also used for ventilating the mines and for winding and hauling. The miners established themselves in pit villages around the mines. They began to develop their own language and culture, including games. Scotland’s Black Diamond Exhibition at the Scottish Mining Museum in Midlothian allows visitors to see the danger and experience the blood, toil and sweat that existed in this once hazardous environment through its Magic Helmets Project. These are unique helmets that are fitted with remote-controlled headphones that describe the scenes that the visitor is looking at. They can examine the largest winding engine in Scotland, which hauled both men and coal up and down the pit shaft for almost a century and is still in working order, before being conducted around the coal faces by guides who are former miners. These men are able to relate insights and anecdotes from their life-long experience of working in the mining industry. Visitors are led along the re-created underground roadway and coalface to sample the atmosphere and noise of a working pit. There is the pithead where generations of coalminers descended 500 metres into the blackness of the bowels of the earth in the ‘Lady Vic’. The Scottish Mining Museum has a fully accessible, three-storey visitor centre which features two major exhibitions with interactive displays, reconstructions, sounds and visuals to explain this lost way of life. These are ‘The Story of Coal’, which tells the history and technology of coal, and ‘A Race Apart’, which relates the story and the culture of the mining communities The education facilities at the museum cater for the 5 to 14 curriculum guidelines, and are aimed at teaching science and technology. This is mostly based on problem solving through the use of experiments. One example is building an arch from foam blocks in order to create a bridge that is sufficiently strong for the youngsters to walk over. Occasionally they are giving the task of pedalling fast enough to create the electricity needed to light up an electric light bulb in the hands-on Operations Centre. // // An education pack is available on request. Other education amenities include lunch and classroom facilities, teaching support materials, loan boxes and videos, and a research library. A restaurant and shop is located on the site and the Old Power House, which caters for up to 140 people, is available for hire. It has already been leased for various events, including company seminars and meetings, social events, exhibitions and lunch for over 100 guests. A major feature of the decor is the genuine 18th century beam engine that crosses the room. Details on hiring the Old Power House can be obtained from Maureen Hardiker on 0131 633 7519. The Scottish Mining Museum is open seven days a week with the exceptions of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Opening times are 10:00 to 17:00 between March and November (last entry to the Magic Helmets Project is at 15:30) and 10:00 to 16:00 from December until February, with the last admission to the Magic Helmets Project being at 14:30. There is a play area available. The Museum is nine miles south of Edinburgh and can be reached from the Edinburgh City Bypass by following the signs for the A7 road. Bus services 3, 3A and 29 run at regular intervals from the city centre of Edinburgh to the Scottish Mining Museum. More details on the Scottish Mining Museum and Black Diamonds, which is based at the 19th Century Lady Victoria Pit in Newtongrange, can be obtained from 0131 663 7519.

Ideas to Strengthen Patriotism Education at Schools

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Recently the international community is watching closely on the dispute between UK and Argentina over Falkland Islands. Both sides have their own standpoints. It is too complex to tell who is wrong or right, but one thing we can learn from the issue between UK and Argentina is that patriotism should be passed to the mass deeply. Pupils and students, certainly, come as the first group to accept the patriotism education. In this situation, teachers are the critical guides, and schools are the education platform. It is necessary to make the young know what is patriotism, whether through traditional ways like visiting, reading, etc. or the modern technological methods, such as watching videos, taking some Flash history quizzes, etc. Teachers are suggested to cultivate students’ patriotism from things close to them, which will make the meaning of love for motherland more acceptable. Basic knowledgeNational flag, emblem, and anthem are some basic knowledge for students. What is the meaning between the lines? Are there any historical affairs behind the song? Teachers need to guide students to respect their flag and other patriotic symbols. Protocols in these occasions are also one of the main tasks in patriotism education. Festivals and memorable days Apart from the concrete symbols of motherland, festivals are an important part to show the uniqueness of one country. Children may know the festivals including their dates, names, etc. , but many of them haven’t been clear about the real meaning to celebrate the days. They have never heard or learned the story behind the symbols. It is teachers’ duty to make the students know the festivals are not just some names, but the lessons we draw from hardness, the glory we get from bravery, the memorial we keep for improvement. History and international situation Professor Johnston often said that if you didn’t know history, you didn’t know anything; you were a leaf that didn’t know it was part of a tree. One of the critical parts in Patriotism Education is to make students absorb nutrition from what happened in the past – history. Touch them from the forefather’s struggle, bravery, wisdom, and decree. Let them realize the hardened journey to the happiness they are enjoying now. Also as George Santayana said, a man’s feet must be planted in his country, but his eyes should survey the world. It is necessary to know one’s own country, while in the new century it is never too much to get familiar with the world. Students can only know the country completely after they have an overall view of the international situation. There are a lot for students or pupils to learn in educational education, then how to guide them to accept and digest what they learn easily and effectively? Teachers and schools need to come up with some creative ways of this education. Students will learn more when they participate in a program than when it was just done in the classroom. Organize some visits or programs to take students to the live site, which must be able to arouse their interests of learning. It is also a good idea to have some service men or the professional hands to come for the speeches. Interactive meetings will offer children good chances to communicate with the heroes or the professors. Besides these vivid teaching, schools can also show some videos or DVD movies to students for the education. It is necessary that schools offer students good sources and learning materials. The combinations of traditional and modern teaching as well as in-classroom and out-classroom teaching are efficient for patriotism education with high quality. After teaching and learning, time to check or evaluate the result comes. Some discussions can be held, which plays as the platform for students to share their feelings and what they have learned. Quiz competition about national knowledge is also an inspiring method to encourage students. Nowadays technology develops so quickly, and the new advanced tactic will help us to share the knowledge with more people. Teachers create a PowerPoint presentation, and then share them on the Web. Schools can also make patriotism quizzes with quiz maker for students to take, and the quizzes could be shared on Web, so more people will learn the precious knowledge. It is also the valuable harvest of students themselves. The importance of patriotism education is self-evident, and it is the duty and also the glory of teachers and schools to guide the young generation to the love of motherland. The goal is to make the student a thoughtful mind, “when it sees a Nation’s flag, sees not the flag only, but the Nation itself; and whatever may be its symbols, its insignia, he reads chiefly in the flag the Government, the principles, the truths, the history which belongs to the Nation that sets it forth. ”
